Biofuels have been around as long as cars have.

A biofuel is a fuel that contains energy from geologically recent carbon fixation. These fuels are produced from living organisms.

Generating Electricity from Wing Waves.

Wind turbines, like windmills, are mounted on a tower to capture the most energy. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more aboveground, they can take advantage of the faster and less turbulent wind.

Producing electricity from solar energy.

Solar energy is a free, inexhaustible resource, yet harnessing it is a relatively new idea. The ability to use solar power for heat was the first discovery.

Turbines catch the wind's energy with their propeller-like blades.

A blade acts much like an airplane wing. When the wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air forms on the downwind side of the blade.

Solar energy may have had great potential

Solar technology advanced to roughly its present design in 1908 when William J. Bailey of the Carnegie Steel Company invented a collector with an insulated box and copper coils.

We have been harnessing the wind's energy for hundreds of years.

For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of wind turbines are usually built close together to form awind plant.

Biofuels are produced from living organisms.

In order to be considered a biofuel the fuel must contain over 80 percent renewable materials.

Geothermal energy is the heat from the Earth.

Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the Earth's surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten rock called magma.

Geothermal heat pumps can tap into this resource to heat and cool buildings.

A geothermal heat pump system consists of a heat pump, an air delivery system (ductwork), and a heat exchanger-a system of pipes buried in the shallow ground near the building.

In the future, civilization will be forced to research and develop alternative energy sources.

Possession of surplus energy is, of course, a requisite for any kind of civilization, for if man possesses merely the energy of his own muscles, he must expend all his strength - mental and physical - to obtain the bare necessities of life.

It May Be Time To Think About Wind Power

It May Be Time To Think About Wind Power
The majority of people do not have any concept about what is possible with wind power, and we really are speaking about the range of effects.

It can happen that you are abruptly without power for a number of days, due to an unforeseen problem causing a break in supply. You promptly have to adapt to living without the convenience of lights, hot water, heating and electrical cooking equipment while whatever is in the fridge won't be chilled and is likely to go bad. Happily, installing wind power and becoming free from the utlility company can prevent this from happening to you.

By having installed wind power you will retain control of the supply of energy in your environment. When other people are having problems with the power supplied by the mainstream companies, you won't even be affected. Unless another person actually lets you know, you may not ever even be aware of problems others are going through. By offering rebates, many states make it irresistible for you to install wind power. It will take more or less 10 years to make up the cost of installing a wind turbine, but thereafter you're home free.

It is hoped what you've found out to this point around wind power, together with also the particular info regarding alternative energy, is useful to you. Please do continue reading even more to acquire supplemental ideas for this subject matter.

It will cost you very little to maintain your home or your business. Imagine what joy to see the electricity meter slow down as your wind power comes on. When the wind is too light you'll draw electric power from the power system, but as soon as the wind starts blowing hard enough to create electricity, you can gain pleasure from watching the meter slow down. In California, if you generate excess electricity and give some into the grid, your meter will run backwards! This ability may be copied by other states a few years down the line, which will make wind power even more irresistible.

While it isn't without disadvantages, the safety and cost advantages may make wind power a superb choice for your family. To see how great a deal this can make in your life, jot down what you expect the energy bills to be for the rest of your life, and compare what it will be with having it supplied by the wind. There must not be any doubt when it comes to the benefits. You may not feel that you can afford to put up a wind generator, but it may be worth it, to take out a loan. You will discover that what you save will be sufficient to pay the loan over not too long a time.

The alternatives that face you are more than just economical, since the way things are going with the environment, the decisions might be made by what happens. If fossil fuels are all used up, then some sort of action will need to be done, whether it is solar, wind or something else. If your house was already being powered by wind power when that day comes around, you would be a lucky man. And the installation costs today are bound to be much lower compared to then.

Solar Panels And Government Schemes Available

Solar Panels And Government Schemes Available
The UK government has had many different types of schemes being offered to incentivise households to put in solar panels.

This may appear to be madness to some - why should the government have to pay individuals to save money on their power bills? The reason is that as a country, we are committed by international treaties, including the one established at Kyoto, to reduce pollution levels. Whilst individuals may not care much regarding their own carbon footprints, the federal government can take into account damages we do to other people through our own pollution, and try to establish the level of pollution that is optimal for society. Establishing this quantity in the first place is very difficult - it seems like intuitive that no pollution in any way would be best. However, there are benefits to the processes that create pollution. For example, if people in developing countries gain access to cars, then they may cause pollution, but the advantage is that they can then afford to feed their families. Therefore, the benefits in such cases outweigh the disadvantages. However, on the other end, a family enjoying a drive for fun will harm the surroundings, and the enjoyment from this probably does not outweigh this, nevertheless the family do not care, although the government does!

There used to be a grant system in position, making solar panels accessible. However, this is removed in April 2010, and replaced through the Feed In Tariff, which applies simply to photovoltaic solar panels.

The Feed In Tariff can be a system under which any electricity produced by a solar energy system and not used by the household, is sold back to the main grid in a set rate per unit of electricity.

In economic terms, this payment system seems better. This is because it rewards households directly for each and every unit of electricity sold back to the main grid, which relates more right to the reduction in carbon emissions than simply the fact that the house has solar panels, because different panels have different efficiencies etc. It also means that if households with solar panels are careful to lower their electricity usage, they shall be able to sell more back to the main grid, and they also will benefit financially.

The disadvantage, however, is always that poorer households won't be able to install solar panels. However, the Renewable Heat Incentive, that has been announced as ongoing only in October 2010, can be a similar scheme, paying per unit produced for thermal solar panels rather than photovoltaic. These systems are much cheaper to put in, costing about a third just as much as photovoltaic systems, hence this has been a progressive step from the government.

Australia Rooftop Solar Future Boosted As Labor Pledges Support

Australia Rooftop Solar Future Boosted As Labor Pledges Support
Australia: Rooftop solar future boosted as Labor pledges supportThe future of the muli-billion dollar rooftop solar industry in Australia is looking more secure after Labor leader Bill Shorten pledged support for the small-scale component of the renewable energy target to stay as is.Shorten's pledge on the rooftop solar scheme comes as he prepares to join the Save Solar campaign, which moves this week to the marginal Sydney seat of Barton this week, and reflects the growing traction that solar is having as an emerging political issue. The Australian Solar Council is to move its campaign to the Melbourne seat of Deakin in October and will also target by-elections in New South Wales and state elections in Victoria, Queensland, and NSW.In an interview with the Australian Financial Review published on Monday, Shorten was scathing of the Warburton Review and called on the government to disown the recommendations."If the prime minister wants to work with Labor to fix the mess he has created, he first has to rule out the recommendations in the Warburton review," Shorten said."That's the job for Tony Abbott. This is the prime minister's report with the industry and job-decimating recommendations he wanted. It belongs in the bin."The Abbott government has managed to convince some in the media that it is moving away from the Warburton findings, but all that Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane has said is that the target will not be scrapped. But scrapping is not the language that Warburton used - he urged it either become a 16,000 gigawatt-hour target (where it is now, so effectively closed to new business), or a 26,000 GWh target, or a true 20%. The renewable energy sector says either option would be a death knell for the industry.Warburton also urged the small-scale scheme to be ended now, or changed significantly to rapidly phase out upfront rebates. He also called for eligible rooftop installations to be cut from 100 kW to 10 kW - a move that the industry says would kill commercial scale solar just as it starts to build.Rooftop solar is a particularly threat to incumbent coal fired generators because it is reducing demand from the grid, and doing so a the time of the day that the generators used to make most of their revenue.Macfarlane has been seeking to put pressure on Labor to "compromise" on the target, but this has been rejected by both Labor and the renewable energy industry. In any case, says Labor, Macfarlane is yet to make any approach.Solar Citizens, which has helped orchestrate the Save Solar campaign that targets marginal seats with large numbers of rooftop solar installations, welcomed Labor's commitment to the rooftop solar scheme."Solar users around Australia will hold the Coalition to their pre-election promise that there would be no cuts to the Target," Solar Citizens Campaigns Director Claire O'Rourke."82% of Australians want to keep the Target strong - any attempt to weaken it will come at a political cost to the major parties."The coalition does have the option to impose changes on the SRES by regulation, but there is growing speculation that even this could be resisted - a highly unusual move.Asked about this, a spokeswoman for environment minister Mark Butler said: "We don't want to see any changes to the SRES and won't enter into hypothetical discussions. The government has offered no plan to negotiate with Labor."Labor is, however, prepared to negotiate with the coalition on the large-scale component of the target. But, it would seem, according to Shorten's remarks to the Australian Financial Review, that it will only go only as far as the recommendation of the chairman of the Climate Change Authority, Bernie Fraser, who said last week the target should stay at 41,000 GWh, but the deadline could be pushed back a few years. As RenewEconomy reported last week, the clean energy industry could likely accept this, as long as the target was not pushed back much beyond 2022 - otherwise is would simply create another void where there would be no new investment in coming years. As it is, there has been no new commitments since late 2012, and the industry will continue to stagnate until the policy certainty is resolved. Modelling for the Warburton review rejected the complaints of the fossil fuel generators that the target could not be met, but if uncertainty remains, then that 2020 target becomes more difficult. The coalition knows this and is trying to use it as a blunt hammer, although there are signs some parts of the party are now starting to appreciate the political consequences of acting so deliberately in the interests of coal-fired generators. This is in stark contrast with the US, where the combination of state-based-renewable energy policies and federal emission rules is likely to reduce the amount of coal-fired generation in that country by one quarter. And in China, where coal imports have actually declined for the first time.Still, some environmental groups are disappointed that Labor is not taking a more ambitious stance, suggesting that it should be seeking an even higher renewable energy target."Labor does not need to back down from the existing target," said Andrew Bray, from the Australian Wind Alliance."The government's own modelling showed that keeping the current target delivered the best result for the consumer. Labor needs to be saying to Australians we can have more renewable energy, to clean up our power supply and reduce our cost of living."Any delays in the target, however, is likely to result in more solar projects than wind projects, as the price of utility-scale solar is expected to fall and crowd out all but the best tier-one wind projects.Bloomberg New Energy Finance has suggested that by 2018, around half of new large-scale renewable energy projects being constructed could be solar. The key is the cost of finance. The Year That Was And Looking Ahead Part One Of Three

The Year That Was And Looking Ahead Part One Of Three
"

Fueled by air pollution issues, in 2013 China started adopting carbon tax schemes.

By Anders Lorenzen"

Did our key predictions for 2013 come true, and what are we expecting from 2014?

US action on climate changeAt the start of 2013, we pondered whether this would be the year in which we'd see the US taking decisive action on climate change, with an informed new Foreign Secretary at the helm in the form of John Kerry. Its hard to say whether it was his own impetus or Kerry's influence, but Obama definitely stepped up and has made climate change a key priority in 2013 and beyond. His inauguration speech in January underlined this when he said 'We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations.' Six months on, in his much anticipated climate speech, he announced that he had authorised the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to draw up plans for stricter legislation on both new and old coal powered power plants, which began in October.

Carbon tax developmentsWe speculated whether 2013 would be the year in which we saw a move towards a global carbon tax. Some developments have been made in this area; whilst a global carbon tax still looks distant, several countries and regions are maneuvering into positions to establish carbon tax schemes of sorts. In Europe, much has been made of the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) which EU's Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard has fought hard to reform. Her first move was to remove the surplus carbon credits called 'backloading', an action first rejected by the commision but finally approved in July and later signed into law. China, the world biggest emitter, saw a carbon market forecast to become the biggest in the country open in the Guangdong region. In Australia the new climate sceptic prime minister Tony Abbott pledged to scrap the country's carbon tax; at the time of writing he has not yet manage to do so.

Renewables and cleantech investmentWe predicted that, despite several countries being hard hit by economics difficulties, overall investment in renewables and other clean tech products would rise, as others developed their renewables infrastructure and invested in energy efficiency and electric cars. Investment in electric transport is in fact steadily rising; the US is the fastest growing market and in Europe, Norway leads other European countries. Developing super-economies such as China are starting to look to the electric transport market too, as are local governments and municipalities. As for renewable energy technologies, 2013 has been a particularly great year for solar PV; small solar systems have literally exploded across many European countries, most noticeably in the UK, Germany, Denmark and Italy. The UK also unveiled the largest solar bridge in the world; Blackfriars Bridge, which traverses the River Thames in London. The UK's Climate and Energy Minister, Greg Barker, launched a solar energy roadmap, announcing that solar is now considered a key player in future energy generation. In March, Denmark broke a new wind power record, one evening producing more electricity from it's wind turbines that the entire country was consuming. New records continue to be set regularly. The US had a great year with record capacity being added onto onshore wind power, surprisingly lead by the oil rich state of Texas. In Africa, Ethiopia opened the country's biggest wind farm and South Africa approved several wind farms.

"In part two we will be looking at the rush to frack in the UK and the coal dominance in Australia."

Why Wind Power Will Not Replace Solar Power

Why Wind Power Will Not Replace Solar Power
Choice energy choices are in reality in, and are in reality practical from one place to another the world. Abnormally few alternative energy sources hold tight recognized themselves to be equal winding up to as wearing and clean to cargo space as solar panel installation. Out of all of the alternative power options out there, wind power is often hailed as the fly applicant up to the almighty solar panel. Unchanging, there's a situation why voters hardship not custody this sensibly complimentary alternative energy source to replace the frequency of solar panel installation anytime straightforwardly. Roundabouts are some of the prevalent reasons why.

* "A selection of spaces are absolutely not cheery, and wind doesn't consistently approach. "Texture power is absolutely not as positively as solar power. You choice follow vivacity, equal in the windiest of spaces, once upon a time the wind absolutely doesn't jerk. Such as that happens, wind turbines won't generate too very much energy. On the other impart, solar panels can create energy equal on dreary vivacity. At the back all, the sun choice consistently be thick with tomorrow.
* "Texture power isn't in the main realistic in areas where you don't hold tight older open chairs. "Areas be fond of the South American rain cats and dogs wood and irrefutable cities don't in the main hold tight the space for wind turbines flaw grave domino effect. Texture turbines DO appeal to up a lot of space. This is not separation to distinction anytime straightforwardly.
* "Texture turbines aren't upright the ductile of carrying out that you can install on your rooftop. "Abide a pining to get energy from wind turbines, but your internal building won't install them? Too bad. You don't in the main hold tight a track on it, diverse with solar panel installation. Due to the consequence of wind turbines, you need the city to clue fund, happen and get paid them.
* "Oi, they are an eyesore! "Planetary panels hold tight been called magnificent by voters who hold tight installed them on rooftops. On the other impart, wind turbines are draw near to consistently called an excrescence by voters deep slim data lines complete with them.
* "Leaf property may imply... Having a cover with solar panels slightly has a edge intuition of having a higher venerated home. On the other impart, wind turbines hold tight been related to thrash fowl above ground nonstop the air, incisive blooming noises, and according to a insufficient few rumors, form sweat in voters who go on winding up to them. The edge property of role go into liquidation wind turbines hold tight been nicknamed "Texture Turbine Syndrome" by doctors investigating the property, and the property can imply dislike, flightiness, headaches, tinnitus, and snappiness. That in the main doesn't dazzling to environmentally affable, does it?

Texture turbines are a step in the accurately management, a large amount so they are assign voters wean off their reliance to coal and other fossil fuels. But are they in the main the advent big thing? We in the main don't spell so, and if you ask any Aussie who has solar panels installed on their homes, they'll doubtless coagulate. As far as we can measure, solar panel installation is in reality separation to farm the way that voters choice get their energy in the fortune.
